table is a temporary artist-run project space organized by Kyle Bellucci Johanson. From 2018-2022 the project was housed in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago. During that time table hosted artists for solo shows accompanied by long-form discursive meals with invited guests of the artist’s choosing. This process privileged the artist’s practice by producing necessary and sufficient conditions to situate their work and host discourse on their own terms.

These discursive meals cultivated primary content for text in a critical publication documenting each artist’s project. This pluralistic document is a critical response to the historicization of artistic practice, offering a counterpoint to institutional/individual authorship and the system of knowledge production.

table is a project space, a gallery, and a dining room in a rented apartment built in 1920. table is not a 501(c)(3) organization or a commercial gallery. It is temporary and reproduced by those who find it useful and necessary. table is an experiment in becoming; inhabiting thresholds between so-called discrete categories of subject and object, public and private, individual and collective, to situate practices and facilitate critical discourse, building community outside of institution or market.

In 2027 table will reopen in New York, reconfigured as a site responsive model to its new location.
